Shapes are achieved using a quilling tool. Often made from plastic with a steel slotted tip.
By placing the strip of paper into the slot and winding the paper around the slot to form a tight scroll.
Many shapes can be achieved by releasing the scroll, letting it get bigger or keeping it tight to make tight scrolls.
When you have completed to the end of the strip - remove and then use your glue tip to stick the paper end and you have achieved your first Quill.
Planning Process
Planning where your quilled pieces is important before any guling starts, I use pins and tracing paper to ensure that the design is set out well before being applied to the chosen backboards.
A handy A4 light board can also be helpful and this is great when making cards using a heavy grade of paper.
Variety of Paper
Using different sizes of paper strips you can achieve depth to the piece. I use 5mm paper strips for most of the work. Canvas works I mainly use the 10mm size.
I will cut my own paper using a guillotine to ensure that the strips are even where I need a colour or have a special type of paper I want to use that does not come in pre-cut options.
A paper shredder can also achieve 5mm strips - perfect when I need lots of white strips!
